National Cancer Awareness Day is celebrated on November 7 in India and it aims at spreading awareness about cancer, its treatment and symptoms. Most people aren’t aware about the type of cancers that exist and the treatment that is available for this deadly disease. National Cancer Awareness Day had started in the year 2014 when it was announced by the Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan. While this day is celebrated in India, we bring you a list of Hollywood celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Maggie Smith, and others who have had a mastectomy- the surgical procedure of removing one or both breasts.

Angelina Jolie: Angelina Jolie’s announcement of a double mastectomy in 2013 was met with a huge amount of love and support from her fans. She had undergone a double mastectomy as a preventive measure as she carried a genetic mutation that increased her risk of breast cancer.  She wrote in an article in The New York Times, sharing about her mother’s 10-year-long battle with breast cancer, and how her kids worry if the same would happen to her "They have asked if the same could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a 'faulty' gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer," she wrote.
